BOSTON

A single father and his four-year-old autistic son have just released a children's book, written by both father and son. Four-year-old, Zachary Malott , who suffers from autism, was the unofficial waterboy for the Harvard University football team during the spring and summer of 2008. The two have joined forces and chronicled young Zachary's experience with the team into a children's book, which has received a lot of attention from the Harvard community.

The book, titled, I'm With The Team, “My Summer With The Harvard Football Team ” features the entire 2008 Harvard football team, and coaching staff. Also featured is NFL superstar, Isaiah Kacyvenski. The book was released on Valentine's Day and is available in several bookstores in the Harvard University area, including Harvard's official bookstore, The COOP. The book is also available through Amazon.com.

Zachary's dad, Michael Malott became a full time parent just over two years ago, walking away from a fairly successful entertainment career to be a full time dad. Malott had most recently been the person behind creating and producing the tribute album to late Jamaican reggae star, Peter Tosh. The project had featured Eric Clapton, Slash, Ben Harper, Sean Paul and a wide array of others, each contributing their version of a Tosh song.

Zachary's biological mother, who has not made any kind of financial contribution to Zach's welfare, had battled a drug and alcohol addiction since she was a child, and had become a danger to Zachary's welfare. The court agreed and issued a permanent protective order and granted Malott sole custody of his child. It turned out that Zach, in fact was the third child that his mother had abandoned. The court would later sever her of her parental rights.

So, Zach and his father started out in a new life together, and found themselves establishing a new home in Boston. But, being a full time mommy and daddy to the young toddler was nothing less than challenging for the new and inexperienced father. But Zach's medical condition required extensive therapy and his father's constant supervision. Zachary was put into day care a couple times, but that didn't work. Zachary became so upset when separated from his father, that he would become physically ill and it was quickly established that day care was not going to be an option for the single father. So the elder Malott realized that any kind of a new career was going to have to be one conducted from home.

Malott, who actually possess a degree in law, juggles several job titles to try and keep ends met for his family, even helping to tutor Harvard and Suffolk Law students. But Zachary requires extensive therapy beyond that which is covered by Zachary's insurance, and those extra expenses add up to well over a thousand dollars monthly.

So Father and son just released young Zach's first book in the hopes of generating sales to raise money to help cover Zach's therapy and care. Despite their own financial dilemma, the two have decided to donate ten percent of the money from sales to the charity, Autism Speaks. Malott said the two came to the decision after the charity had stepped up and offered tremendous support to the pair in their effort. “It just seemed like the right thing to do,” exclaims Malott.

This is not the only first book that the duo will be putting out in the immediate future. A second book titled, Let's Explore Boston , will take children on an exciting journey through Boston and its history.

But, Let's Explore Boston , which will be released on March 21 st , is to be the first of a planned series of “Let's Explore” children's books from Zach & his father. Each book will explore a new and exciting location for Zach and children to enjoy. The two have already compiled material for a “ Let's Explore Los Angeles ” book due out before the end of this summer. In fact, the two only recently sent a letter to the White House inquiring as to the ability to photograph during White House tours for a possible, Let's Explore The White House book.

Zach's latest book, I'm With The Team , has found it's way into several top bookstores and has been getting significant attention. According to Ben Newcomer of Cambridge's famed, Harvard Bookstore, Zach's book has generated much interest, including, the President of Harvard, Drew Faust, who had been following Zach's progress with the team.

The people at Harvard have been nothing less than extraordinary ” states Zach's father. “ The level of compassion and sincerity, these people have shown, and that I have experienced has been overwhelming”. He adds. Zach's experience has certainly been one of a lifetime and Zach's dad has felt honored to be a part of the experience. “ To be a parent, and see these people do so many wonderful things for my son, you could never express it in words” Malott states, “I'm just tremendously moved ” he adds. “ To top everything off, it's Harvard, the most prestigious university out there, it's an outright honor”. Someday Malott says, his son will tell his grandchildren about the time he worked with the Harvard football team and a coach who will go down in history as one of the greatest coaches in football.

Zachary has also unleashed another talent at a very young age. The ability to create abstract works of art, that have critics comparing his works to that of famed American painter, Jackson Pollock. Zach has created several works, and has already been featured in the media for his talent. His works have been displayed in a handful of events and galleries, receiving great praise. His work is even scheduled to be featured for a month long exhibit in London, England this upcoming July.

Zach and his dad, admit to having one other major project in the works, but will announce more on that at a later date.

Producers from Good Morning America, recently contacted the two regarding a possible segment on Zach for their morning show. Malott is hopeful for that, and hopes that a little national attention could help cover some of the overwhelming therapy costs for young Zachary's treatment. Zach is a very delicate child and requires a lot of attention and his father has made it perfectly clear that he would give it all up again tomorrow without a second thought to take the responsibility of taking care of Zachary all over again.

Malott sets a good example for a number of other father's that come to mind that have just walked out their children's life. However, in this situation the roles have been reversed and Malott is taking on the unusual responsibility of being both a stay at home and working mom and dad.

Zach and his dad have launched an exciting and entertaining website, accessible at either www.imwiththeteam.com or www.zachscorporation.com . The website features full information on book titles and also shows most of Zach's paintings. Paintings are also available for purchase and just like with Zach's book proceeds, revenue goes towards Zach's therapy. There are also lots of fun animations and up to minute news on the two's endeavors featured on the site.

At four-years of age, Zachary is the CEO of his own corporation, and dad is his number one employee. Because Zach's new book is mostly of regional interest to the Harvard and surrounding Boston area, dad was faced with the task of not only self-publishing the book for the two, but also handling all the marketing, promotion, and retail placement of the book. A task that dad says wasn't easy. But Zach's overall charm won shopkeepers over in the end and several top bookstores ordered copies to stock in their store. “ I'm really grateful to them ,” Malott states. “ Without them we'd never have a way to try and make this work for us ” he adds.

The two are hoping to continue their great relationship with the Harvard football team next season and are hoping to move to the Cambridge area. “ One good thing about the book, is that it has allowed us to create a strong tie to Boston, specifically Harvard'. Claims Malott who adds that this is important to him. “ We love Boston, we had to start over and the process has been ongoing and long, but I can say now at least, we found our home” .
